18.06.2021

The second panel also dealt with foreign support for democratic opposition, expected assistance measures from the EU and US, and the impact of the events in Minsk on transatlantic security.

The chief of Polish diplomacy attended a panel on Belarus’s future. He emphasised that the country’s fate must be decided only by its citizens expressing their will in free and fair elections. Only this will ensure security and sustainable development of the country and the entire region. The minister noted that the other key factor is effective multilateralism, which ensures the functioning of the law and rules-based international order.

“The will of the Belarusian people and the aspirations of civil society should play a leading role in shaping Belarus’s future,” stressed Minister Rau. “We, the Poles, understand it perfectly well and think that it is Belarusians themselves who best know which political course to choose for their country,” he added. The Polish foreign minister furthermore congratulated Belarus’s opposition and civil society on their achievements in the struggle for democratic change.
