Minister Sikorski meets International Special Envoy for the Implementation of EU Sanctions David O'Sullivan

28.05.2024

Today’s talks focused on domestic initiatives to combat the circumvention of sanctions imposed on Russia in response to its aggression against Ukraine as well as on exchanging information on the latest ways in which third countries are circumventing sanctions. Also discussed were possible ways of strengthening the EU response to these actions.

Conversation and joint press conference between Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and EU Special Envoy for Sanctions D.O'Sullivan.

Minister Sikorski outlined steps taken by Poland to tighten the sanctions regime nationally at legislative, coordination, and operational levels. He also announced a step-up in sanctions-related cooperation during the forthcoming Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, both with the Special Envoy for the Implementation of Sanctions and with the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.

For his part, David O'Sullivan discussed the conclusions of his recent trip to South-East Asia and presented an action plan for the coming months.

The talks also provided an opportunity to discuss the emerging trade practices related to the circumvention of sanctions by third countries. The interlocutors agreed on the need to continue efforts to curb them, using existing national and EU mechanisms.

The head of the Polish MFA declared his support for the Special Envoy’s activities. He stressed that restricting Russia’s access to goods of military significance precipitates its defeat in the war against Ukraine and works to restore peace in Europe.
