The event, held at the initiative of the head of Polish diplomacy, was aimed at presenting MFA’s priorities and activities during Poland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stressed that the work carried out as part of the Polish Presidency concerning foreign and security policy will focus on three areas: maximising support for Ukraine, maintaining current policies towards Russia and Belarus, and strengthening the security and resilience of the European Union and its partners.
The MFA head paid a lot of attention to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, highlighting the need to continue the EU’s military, political, and financial support for Kyiv. The Polish Presidency will endeavour to step up EU sanctions against Russia and Belarus, as well as to make the fight against their circumvention more effective. The latter will be the focus of a conference to be held during the Polish Presidency in cooperation with International Special Envoy for the Implementation of EU Sanctions David O’Sullivan.
The head of Polish diplomacy also announced the Kościuszko Forum, another event to be held as part of the Presidency, which will constitute a platform for debate on the history and future of the community of European nations, addressed to the representatives of the Belarusian civil society.
“During the Polish Presidency, we will ensure a proper pace and quality of the process of eastward and southward enlargement of European Union,” said Minister Sikorski. The goal of our Presidency is to make progress in relation to Ukraine and Moldova, as well as the Western Balkans.
Minister Sikorski, as co-initiator of the Eastern Partnership, informed of plans of the Polish Presidency concerning updating and reinvigorating the format. He added that their aim is to make the partnership complementary to the enlargement process.
As part of strengthening the security and resilience of the EU and its partners, the Polish Presidency will seek to develop the EU’s defence dimension, among other things. We will also work to deepen the EU–NATO cooperation.
Minister Sikorski announced steps to be taken to strengthen the transatlantic relations and develop the EU-US dialogue. The priorities of the Polish Presidency will also include efforts to foster closer cooperation between the European Union and the United Kingdom on foreign, security, and defence policies.
