On 28 November, head of Polish diplomacy Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk visited Brussels to take part in a meeting of NATO foreign ministers held on 28-29 November.

During the debate, foreign ministers of the North Atlantic Alliance focused on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and how it has affected the security of the Euro-Atlantic area. The allies declared their willingness to continue providing Kyiv with the necessary assistance.

Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk noted the permanent nature of the threat posed by Russia to security in Europe. Therefore, further adjustment of NATO’s collective defence, supported by all allies’ appropriate level of defence spending, is a priority. Poland is exemplary in this regard with its 4% of GDP spent on defence.

Also discussed were the arrangements to celebrate a jubilee NATO summit in Washington in July 2024. Falling next year, the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the North Atlantic Alliance should be used as an opportunity to demonstrate the power and unity of the transatlantic community in the face of a threat from Russia and other security threats. In this context, it is vital to promptly complete Sweden’s accession to NATO, which Poland has been consistently advocating.

Polish foreign minister emphasised the need to implement the decisions made during the Madrid and Vilnius summits to draw a feasible roadmap for Ukraine’s membership of NATO.

The visit was also an opportunity to talk unofficially with other foreign ministers on the threats posed by amendments to the EU treaties. Minister Szynkowski vel Sęk presented a number of arguments to halt these changes.
