25.09.2020
As part of the High-Level Week opening the 75th jubilee session of the United Nations General Assembly, Minister Zbigniew Rau took part in an online foreign ministers’ meeting of the Alliance for Multilateralism.
In his speech, Minister Rau outlined global challenges which can be addressed only through solidarity and joint action of the whole international community. He reflected on the issues of pandemic, climate crisis, cybersecurity and women’s role in armed conflicts, declaring Poland’s support for the idea of multilateralism.
Together with the foreign ministers of over 70 countries, Minister Rau backed the Declaration of the Alliance’s Principles which reads that “(…) close and effective multilateral cooperation based on the objectives and principles of the UN Charter, international law and justice is an indispensable component of actions for ensuring peace, stability, and wellbeing (...)”. The aim of the Alliance and the Declaration their members adopted is to build up possibly broadest support for the idea of multilateral order as a path to achieve stability and international peace.
Alliance for Multilateralism is an informal network launched at the initiative of foreign ministers of France and Germany in September 2019 on the sidelines of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The Alliance is a loose formation of countries that provide their backing for strengthening multilateral mechanisms on the basis of international law.
