28.11.2020
The chief of Polish diplomacy took part in the Carpathians Interregional Group meeting at the invitation of Marshal of the Podkarpackie Province Władysław Ortyl.
During the meeting, marshals of the Małopolskie, Podkarpackie and Śląskie Provinces signed a joint declaration of support for the establishment of the EU’s Macro-regional Strategy for the Carpathian Region. “In my opinion, it is an important moment for the whole Carpathian region, and for its further development,” emphasised Minister Rau in his speech. “Macro-regional strategies are a proven tool of promoting multi-level and cross-sectoral cooperation that goes beyond administrative borders. Statistics and figures clearly show that the Carpathian region has great potential as a separate region. However, it needs substantial support and joint actions.”
During the meeting, the participants also discussed cooperation as part of the Carpathian Convention. On 25 November this year, Poland took over the presidency of the platform from Hungary. The Carpathian Convention deals with the preservation of natural and cultural heritage of the Carpathians. One of priorities of Poland’s presidency will be to take steps to encourage the EU’s accession to the Convention.
