Minister Zbigniew Rau meets with Josep Borrell in Brussels
18.01.2021
The Monday talks between the chief of Polish diplomacy and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy served to present Poland’s viewpoint on the most important issues related to the EU external policy, particularly transatlantic ties and the EU Eastern Partnership.
Minister Rau spoke about the importance of transatlantic relations. He expressed his belief that the EU and the US should reinforce policy coordination, and particularly strengthen transatlantic cooperation in security, countering disinformation, promoting free market principles and the so-called connectivity. Recalling the latter, the minister mentioned the Three Seas Initiative as an example of a successful infrastructure and investment cooperation between a large number of EU member states and the US.
The chief of Polish diplomacy also stressed that the EU needs to step up its work on the economic plan for a democratic Belarus which was put forward by Poland and other V4 countries. He reminded that Warsaw is actively shaping the course of discussions on the Eastern Partnership’s future. Furthermore, he expressed his expectation that the Three Seas summit, planned for this year, will bring new, ambitious and feasible goals of the EU’s cooperation with the Partnership countries.
Minister Rau also presented Poland’s view of the EU’s relations with Russia. In his conversation with Josep Borrell, he emphasised that the recent developments, in particular Alexei Navalny’s arrest, justify giving human rights the top priority when holding a dialogue with Moscow.
Direct contacts with the High Representative are an important element of Poland’s activity at the EU forum and shaping European position concerning foreign affairs and security. The talks were held ahead of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council meeting, which Minister Rau will attend next week.
