17.03.2022
On 17 March 2022, Minister Zbigniew Rau met with Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain José Manuel Albares Bueno. The talks focused on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and its political, security, military and humanitarian consequences in the European and global dimension.
While in Poland, the Spanish foreign minister also visited the border crossing point in Medyka, where he met with representatives of the Border Guard, and the reception centre for refugees in Przemyśl.
The head of Spanish diplomacy thanked Poland for its efforts to provide humanitarian aid to Ukrainian citizens, and for its help in evacuating Spanish diplomats and nationals from Ukraine after the country had been attacked by Russia. He pointed out that Spain is actively engaged in assisting refugees by providing humanitarian aid on an unprecedented scale and by hosting refugees in the territory of Spain. The Spanish diplomat stressed that his country intends to continue its military support for Ukraine.
The ministers discussed in particular the strengthening of NATO’s eastern flank and the EU’s joint response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including the stepping-up of sanctions against Russia and the options to make the EU independent of Russia’s supplies of primary energy sources. The diplomats stressed that Poland and Spain have similar positions on the assessment of threats and possible countermeasures, and pointed out the need to maintain close relations and strong bilateral cooperation.
