27.11.2020
“Poland enjoys excellent relations with the Mediterranean partners. As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, we strongly advocated engagement with the region, which is also a priority area of Polish humanitarian aid and development cooperation, including in Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, and North African countries,” said Minister Zbigniew Rau during his speech at the 5th Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean, held on Friday, which coincided with celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the Barcelona Process.
The minister also recalled Poland’s commitment which is visible through the return to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the participation in the Global Coalition Against Daesh.
During the meeting, which brought together foreign ministers from 42 countries – the European Union and its partners from the Mediterranean Basin – Minister Rau highlighted the achievements of the Union for the Mediterranean in recent years. “We increased economic and social opportunities by developing infrastructural connections, creating networks of contacts in education, culture and business, and boosting trade,” noted the chief of Polish diplomacy. He went on to add that the COVID-19 pandemic, extremism, unemployment and illegal migration are challenges that call for strengthened regional cooperation, also in this format.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 5th Regional Forum was held in the form of a virtual conference.
Launched in 2008, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) is a continuation of the Barcelona Process, whose 25th anniversary is marked in 2020. The UfM provided an unprecedented impetus to the cooperation with partners from the Mediterranean region by establishing an institutional framework of cooperation with an appropriate management model to promote regional cooperation, integration and dialogue in key areas.
