The Allies confirmed their unity and determination to oppose Russia’s attempts to undermine the foundations of international security in Europe. The officials also condemned Russian aggression, including crimes committed against the civilian population, and showed unequivocal support for Ukraine and announced that it would be strengthened. 

As part of close collaboration and coordination before the NATO Summit in Madrid, the ministers discussed their expectations towards the new Strategic Concept of the Alliance. 

The Allies jointly found that in the face of Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, a fundamental change has occurred in the security environment, which will require the revision of NATO’s deterrence and defence posture. NATO top diplomats agreed on the need to strengthen the Alliance’s eastern flank to ensure effective protection of its territory. “We also talked about ways to provide further support to those neighbouring countries which are most vulnerable to Russia’s acts of destabilisation. The Allies agree that Moldova, Georgia, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina will require special attention and support to counteract Moscow’s harmful influence,” said Minister Rau.

The head of the Polish MFA also stated that the Russian threat, also from the territory of Belarus, calls for a fresh look at European security. “Increasing capabilities for the purposes of collective defence is becoming increasingly important,” added the Polish official.
