Minister Zbigniew Rau to attend opening of 49th session of United Nations Human Rights Council

On 1-2 March 2022, Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Zbigniew Rau will visit Geneva to attend the opening of the 49th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

On the sidelines of the session, the head of Polish diplomacy will also hold a series of bilateral meetings, including with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The Polish foreign minister will deliver his address at the high-level segment opening the 49th session of the UN Human Rights Council as well as at the high-level segment of the Conference on Disarmament. The top Polish diplomat will also hold a series of bilateral meetings with the following officials: UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, Director General of the International Organization for Migration António Vitorino, and President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer. The talks will mainly focus on cooperation aimed at assisting refugees from Ukraine. 

The year 2022 marks the end of Poland’s three-year membership of the Human Rights Council. The Council was established in 2006. In the past, Poland was its member twice, in 2006-2007 and in 2011-2013. The Council convenes for three regular sessions a year. It is composed of 47 members, elected for three-year terms, that represent five regional groups.
