Minister Zbigniew Rau visits Berlin
16.10.2020
“My visit to Berlin – despite the difficult situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic – is an expression of significance that the Polish government attaches to keeping good relations with Germany, our neighbour, a close partner within the European Union and an ally within NATO. Continuing in-person meetings, despite the imposed restrictions, confirms the intensity of the bilateral political dialogue between our capitals,” said Minister Zbigniew Rau starting his two-day visit to Berlin.
On the first day of his visit, Minister Rau met with Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas. The Polish and German chiefs of diplomacy discussed current issues on the bilateral, EU and international agenda. The talks also focused on Eastern policy, in particular the situation in Belarus following the last presidential election.
During the talks, Minister Rau highlighted the importance of memorial sites and expressed his hopes for the German side to cooperate in this respect through including Polish representatives into decision-making processes related to these places on the German territory. “As always, we are looking forward to continuing the debate on Polish community in Germany in a round table format,” noted the head of Polish diplomacy. The minister also said he would expect the German partners to present substantial solutions to the matter of supporting teaching of the Polish language, according to previous bilateral arrangements and provisions laid down by the Polish-German Treaty of Good Neighbourship and Friendly Cooperation.
On the second day of his visit, Minister Rau took part in a discussion organised by the Körber Foundation. He also met with Minister-President of Brandenburg and Coordinator of German-Polish Intersocietal and Cross-Border Cooperation Dietmar Woidke.
