Minister Zbigniew Rau visits Germany

27.07.2021

During his visit to Germany today, the head of Polish diplomacy has met with the chancellor candidates in the September parliamentary elections: the leader of the Greens, Annalena Baerbock, and the SPD’s Minister of Finance Olaf Scholz, as well as President of the Bundestag Wolfgang Schäuble. The aim of the talks was to reiterate Poland’s opposition to the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

The Co-leader Annalena Baerbock and her fellow party members share Poland’s concerns and its critical stance towards the Nord Stream 2 project, especially in the context of threats to eastern policy. We are satisfied with the Greens’ clear position on the construction of this pipeline. We hope that it will be reflected in any possible coalition negotiations after the elections, and incorporated in a coalition agreement - said Minister Rau.

During the talks, the head of Polish diplomacy expressed his gratitude for the involvement of respective parties in the adoption by the Bundestag of the cross-party act of 30 October 2020 on building a memorial in Berlin to commemorate Polish victims of World War II. The subject resonated particularly strongly with Wolfgang Schäuble, who counts as one of the strongest proponents of this symbolic place. The Polish minister also hoped that the act will be implemented promptly.

A proper commemoration of Polish victims of World War II remains our priority. We hope that the final shape of a place devoted to the martyrdom of Poles will take into account its exceptional historical context and Polish sensitivity - underlined the head of Polish diplomacy.

Minister Zbigniew Rau’s talks with Olaf Scholz, the representative of the federal government, covered, among others, a conference on the future of Europe. The officials also exchanged views on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. The top Polish diplomat stressed that the completion of this project is detrimental to European solidarity. He also expressed his belief that good partner relations with Poland will remain one of the cornerstones of a new federal government’s foreign policy, and that Polish-German relations will be appropriately addressed in a new coalition agreement.

In his talks in Berlin today, Minister Zbigniew Rau also raised historical issues including compensating Poles for the harm and losses of the World War II.
