Ministerial meeting of the Sahel Coalition

“We need a stable and peaceful Sahel, where citizens can trust the state, human rights are respected and people can see their future bright. It is in our common interest to eradicate the roots of instability – terrorism, trafficking, impunity, lack of basic social services.” – underlined Minister of Foreign Affairs, Zbigniew Rau in his speech delivered during second ministerial meeting of the Coalition for Sahel.
The meeting was organized by Secretariat of the Coalition for Sahel in form of a video conference. Minister Rau delivered a speech in which he expressed Polish support for the Coalition and its efforts to build a stable and peaceful Sahel. He also recognized the importance of the Roadmap of the Sahel Coalition – a set of guidelines which will help to advance the goals of the Coalition.
Moreover Minister expressed the need for a closer cooperation with regional organizations such as the Economic Community of West African States to counteract spreading terrorism to the coastal countries of the Gulf of Guinea. He also brought attention to disinformation and the need to effectively neutralize such threats.
The Coalition for the Sahel is an international initiative announced during the Pau Summit of 13 January 2020 by France and 5 Sahel Countries (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger) with support from UN, UE and African Union. It was created as a platform to coordinate efforts of states and international actors involved in the Sahel. It focuses on four areas: fighting terrorism, building military capabilities of Sahel countries, return of state/administration and development aid.
