Poland runs an evacuation flight from Marrakesh under EU Civil Protection Mechanism
28.04.2020
Thanks to the #LotDoDomu (“LOT flies back home”) initiative which lasted from 15 March to 5 April 2020, more than 55,000 Poles returned to their homeland. It does not mean, however, that Ministry of Foreign Affairs has terminated assisting our nationals abroad. As a result of cooperation between the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, LOT Polish Airlines and the MFA, an airplane with our citizens on board landed in Warsaw in the evening of 28 April. The Poles could return from Morocco under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM).
Thirty Polish and one hundred and ten EU citizens travelling on the plane, disembarked from it during a refueling stop in Berlin.
The decision to organize the flight to Morocco in the UCMP format was made jointly by the Prime Minister’s Chancellery and MFA. Currently, there is no possibility to leave the country on a commercial flight, repatriation flights are occasional and do not guarantee a sufficient number of seats for citizens of other countries. Additionally, Morocco introduced extremely restrictive measures to fight the coronavirus. They are effective, but at the same time may cause numerous difficulties for the foreigners who are staying longer.
After all our nationals registered for the flight, we could offer the rest of available seats to citizens of other EU member states. This allowed the flight to satisfy all the necessary conditions to be run under the UCPM.
The MFA headquarters and its missions abroad constantly follow the situation in the world. All our nationals who wish to leave the country they are staying in, should seek information about available connections on the websites of the carriers or, if scheduled flights have been suspended, on the websites and social media accounts of the Polish diplomatic missions abroad. We advise that all Poles staying abroad register in the Odyseusz (“Odysseus”) system. It enables our consuls to provide information about connections which allow our nationals to return to Poland or to other European country.
