Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arkadiusz Mularczyk, Government Plenipotentiary for Compensation for Damage Caused by German Aggression and Occupation in 1939-1945, asked the Secretary General of the Council of Europe as well as the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers to establish cooperation and provide support regarding Poland’s efforts to obtain compensation for losses caused by the German aggression and occupation in 1939-1945.
During a press conference, Deputy Minister Mularczyk recalled the vast scope of damage inflicted by Germany during its invasion and occupation of Poland in 1939-1945. It was another proposal by the Government Plenipotentiary for Compensation for Damage Caused by German Aggression and Occupation in 1939-1945, which follows up on the efforts of the Polish government initiated by the preparation of the report on war losses.
He also reminded that the German state has not compensated for these losses in a systemic manner. The deputy minister also underlined that turning to the Council of Europe for support is in line with other measures aimed to increase the rank of Poland’s justified claims. Poland hopes that the German government will eventually respond properly to those claims.
“Germany has never assumed full legal liability for the actions of its legal predecessor during this period in Poland’s territory,” stressed Deputy Foreign Minister Arkadiusz Mularczyk. He also added that the Federal Republic of Germany should take systemic actions to compensate losses suffered by Poland from Germany.
Deputy Minister Mularczyk noted the key role played by the Council of Europe regarding human rights, democratisation, and the rule of law. He emphasised that Poland hopes for smooth cooperation with and meaningful support of the Council of Europe in the process of obtaining compensation for losses caused by the German aggression and occupation in 1939-1945.
