Pole appointed member of Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT)

On 22 October 2020, during the eighth meeting of the State Parties to the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT), the Polish candidate Jakub Czepek, PhD was elected a member of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) with 49 votes in support.

Operating within the Committee against Torture, the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment is a new kind of body in the United Nations human rights system. It has a preventive mandate focused on an innovative, sustained and proactive approach to the prevention of torture and ill treatment. The SPT started its work in February 2007.

The SPT is a body composed of 25 independent and impartial experts coming from various regions of the world who have professional experience in criminal law, prison administration, police, and the judiciary. Members are elected by States Parties to the OPCAT for a four-year term and can be re-elected once.

On 22 October 2020, 12 new experts of the SPT were elected to replace members whose mandate will expire on 31 December 2020.
