Polish Consulate General in Saint Petersburg closes down after 52 years
08.01.2025
Today, on 8 January, Polish Ambassador to Russia Krzysztof Krajewski has attended a closing ceremony of the consular post of the Republic of Poland in Saint Petersburg.
The Polish Consulate General in Saint Petersburg was shut down upon Russia’s withdrawal of its consent to the activity of the Polish post. It is a retorsion to a decision of the Polish foreign minister to close down Russia’s Consulate General in Poznań in the aftermath of acts of sabotage committed on Polish territory and linked to Russian authorities.
- The time has come to thank all of you who considered this place an important one. A place which was a value in itself, a world completely different from the surrounding one, where you could get help, but also make your dreams of a better world come true, or escape from reality, at least for a while.
We also want to thank all Polish diplomats who have served here for many years on their very difficult missions. We thank all consuls general, all directors of the Polish Institute in Saint Petersburg, and all staff of the Consulate and the Institute, in particular those who have served here with great dedication over the past three years after Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. We thank all Poles and the Polish diaspora in Saint Petersburg - reads a message from the Polish Consulate General in Saint Petersburg.
Ambassador Krajewski expressed his hope that the Polish consular post will return to Saint Petersburg in “better times”.
Polish representations in Russia still operate in Moscow, Kaliningrad, and Irkutsk.
