Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz meets with his Lithuanian counterpart Linas Linkevičius

18.03.2020

Held in Warsaw at the request of the Lithuanian side, the meeting focused on Poland’s assistance in enabling Lithuanian citizens to return home due to the epidemiological threat caused by the spread of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, as well as the situation of Polish citizens coming back to their homeland through the territory of Lithuania.

The ministers discussed the situation on the Polish-German and Polish-Lithuanian borders. Minister Linkevičius expressed his gratitude for Poland’s actions aimed at enabling Lithuanian citizens to return home despite traffic disruptions on the Polish border. These actions include convoys from the German border and through Poland, launching a special railway connection from Frankfurt/Oder to Kaunas, setting up special ferry services, and opening an additional border crossing point Ogrodniki-Lazdijai on the Polish-Lithuanian border, which should help to improve passenger flow on both borders.

Minister Jacek Czaputowicz informed his Lithuanian counterpart about measures that the Polish government has undertaken to limit the spread of coronavirus and the Polish MFA’s wide-scale actions to assist Poles in their return home. He thanked the Lithuanian side for the efforts it has made to date to organise transit for Poles returning home via Lithuania and expressed his hope that Lithuania would continue to assist Poland in the future.

The ministers agreed that in the context of challenges posed by the spread of coronavirus, it is necessary to maintain close cooperation, both bilateral and at the EU level.
