Polish-Iranian consultations
11.03.2022
On 11 March 2022, Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau held a telephone conversation with head of diplomacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
The talks focused on current issues on the bilateral agenda. Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian thanked Poland for its assistance in evacuating Iranian nationals from Ukraine via Warsaw, and for the donation of two million AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines to Iran, including the Afghan refugees in Iran.
Minister Zbigniew Rau underscored that Poland’s support is an expression of solidarity with Iran and its citizens, as our two countries have for many years enjoyed friendly relations that go back to the 16th century. The head of the Polish MFA stressed that Poland remembers about a special element of our relations, that is the help and shelter Iran provided to 120,000 Poles evacuated from the Soviet Union during World War II. This year marks the 80th anniversary of evacuation of General Władysław Anders’s army to Iran.
The top diplomats of Poland and Iran also discussed international affairs, including prospects for a political resolution of the armed conflict triggered by Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Ukraine, as well as prospects for a swift restoration of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement. Minister Zbigniew Rau pointed out that Poland considers the JCPOA as an essential element of the global architecture of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
