“Poland and Malta are bound by ties of friendship. I am satisfied with the state of our bilateral relations and do hope that we can continue this dialogue and cooperation within the EU,” said Deputy Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk.
The ministers expressed expectation that the improving pandemic situation in Poland and Malta will allow the two countries to promptly conduct the postponed highest-level visits, including the state visit of the President of the Republic of Poland to Malta, and that of Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Malta Evarist Bartolo to Warsaw.
“In the context of the 50th anniversary of establishing Polish-Maltese diplomatic relations on 23 October 2021, we are awaiting the formal opening of the Polish Embassy in Valletta - a considerable step in our bilateral relations,” said Permanent Secretary Christopher Cutajar.
The discussion reaffirmed the positive dynamics of bilateral relations, also in their economic dimension. The ministers referred to the intensive academic exchange, particularly the presence of Polish students in Malta. On the agenda was the programme of commemoration of the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations. The interlocutors mentioned the exchange of support the two countries offer to each other at international organisations. They also expressed hope for extending the bilateral treaty base in the nearest future.
The talks confirmed that both sides wish to encourage tourism in the summer, with regard to both Poles visiting Malta and Maltese nationals visiting Poland, the prospects for which seem promising in view of an improved pandemic situation and progress in the vaccination process.
The ministers also discussed key points on the European and international agenda, among others Eastern policy and developments in Libya.
In the context of Poland’s chairmanship of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe in 2022, Permanent Secretary Christopher Cutajar stressed that “OSCE needs a strong leadership, which Poland will undoubtedly deliver.” He also underlined the openness of Maltese authorities to close cooperation with the Polish chairmanship, especially in the Mediterranean dimension.
