MFA Statement on the situation in Afghanistan
12.08.2021
We are appalled by the unprecedented deterioration of the security situation in Afghanistan resulting in record numbers of civilian casualties as well as targeted killings due to the advancement of the Taliban offensive. Such atrocities, violence and human suffering in Afghanistan should stop immediately.
We urge all the parties to reinvigorate and advance peace talks. Humanitarian access to areas the Taliban control must be granted and respect for human rights, including the rights of women, and democratic achievements must be preserved. We are constantly discussing the developments in Afghanistan with our EU partners and NATO allies.
Poland has showed solidarity with Afghanistan for many years with over 33,000 Polish soldiers and employees of the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and various NGOs participating in the mission which was one of our longest and most difficult foreign operations. Poland’s aim was clear: to fight against international terrorism, rebuild statehood and prepare Afghan forces to assume responsibility for their country. Some of Polish soldiers did not return from the mission. Poland remembers those who perished and cares for their families.
