Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs relating to the declaration of Finland and Sweden about their intention to join NATO
16.05.2022
Poland welcomes Finnish and Swedish governments’ decision to apply for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation membership. This historic step confirms the radical change in the security situation in Europe as a result of Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
It also highlights the importance of Allied commitments in the changed situation in the Euro-Atlantic area. Poland is convinced that Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership will strengthen security in the Baltic Sea region and contribute to extending the zone of stability in Europe.
NATO's door should remain open to all countries that share the values and goals of the North Atlantic Alliance. In Poland’s view, Finland and Sweden already meet these criteria and will soon join the Alliance as fully-fledged members.
