Statement on declaring TV Belsat portal and social media networks extremist

28.07.2021

MFA STATEMENT

Declaring TV Belsat’s news reporting activity on the Internet as extremist is yet another element of an ongoing months-long crackdown from the authorities in Minsk on independent media and those who not share the views of the government. We were concerned to learn about the decision by a Belarusian court on the matter. We have asked the Belarusian side for explanations.

Restrictions imposed on independent media and the freedom of speech are part of the ever expanding mechanisms of repressions and intimidation of society, which is unacceptable to the international community.

TV Belsat has an established position and a well-earned reputation as a medium providing independent and reliable information to Belarusian society. All attempts to limit its activity are met with our strong opposition.

We call on Minsk to respect the freedom of speech, independent media and the status of journalists.
