“For Poland, Sweden is a key partner in the Baltic Sea region and in the European Union. Our relations are strategic in rank,” said Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz at today’s meeting with his Swedish counterpart.
Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Sweden Margot Wallström visited Poland to celebrate the 100th anniversary of establishing Polish-Swedish relations, the 15th anniversary of Poland’s accession to the EU and 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership, a joint Polish-Swedish initiative.
The talks focused on the EU’s future in the context of EU parliamentary elections, the new institutional cycle and Brexit. The ministers stressed that Poland and Sweden agree on many issues concerning the EU’s enlargement to the Western Balkans and the need for the EU to continue its strong commitment to the region. “We believe that European integration will best ensure the stability and well-being of the Western Balkans and the security of the whole continent,” said Minister Czaputowicz.
The agenda also included the cooperation in the Baltic Sea region on the eve of Poland hosting the 10th Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region in Gdansk (12-13 June) and the foreign ministers’ meeting of the Council of the Baltic Sea States in Jūrmala, Latvia, which will address the issue of reforming the organization to account for the need of synergy between the existing regional cooperation initiatives.
The ministers also noted the very good Polish-Swedish cooperation in the UN. Last year, the two countries were both non-permanent members of the UN Security Council. Mr Czaputowicz briefed his Swedish counterpart on the agenda for Poland’s Presidency of the Security Council in August this year.
Following the bilateral meeting, the ministers took part in a debate at the National School of Public Administration on the EU’s Eastern policy in the context of the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership, which was launched by Poland and Sweden. The ministers agreed about the importance of the potential of the youth and the civil society in the continued development of the Eastern Partnership. Minister Czaputowicz also presented Polish solutions to strengthen the Eastern Partnership: approximation of laws, sectoral cooperation and institutionalisation. Giving it an institutional dimension in the form of a secretariat or a rotating presidency would help the EaP countries maintain the EU’s interest in the further development of the initiative.
