Teleconference of the heads of diplomacy of Poland, Romania and Turkey held in Warsaw
28.04.2020
On 28 April, Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz participated in a teleconference with his counterparts of Romania - Bogdan Aurescu, and Turkey - Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.
“Our countries form three pillars of the eastern NATO flank,” highlighted Minister Czaputowicz. “We hold regular consultations within the Trilogue in order to come up with ideas on how to respond to security developments in our neighbourhood more effectively. We all agree to preserve unity and solidarity of the Alliance, as well as close transatlantic cooperation, which is particularly significant in the context of current threats posed by the pandemic of COVID-19”.
During the teleconference, the top diplomats addressed the issue of cooperation within the North Atlantic Treaty in the light of combating the coronavirus pandemic, including the results of the April meetings of foreign and defence NATO ministers. The participants underlined the importance of maintaining the strong deterrence and defence posture of the Alliance, which is of key significance also in a current situation. The heads of diplomacy discussed the prospects of tightening the trilateral cooperation for stability in the NATO’s closest neighbourhood, especially in Ukraine, Georgia, and the Western Balkans. The evolving security environment in Africa, the Middle East, and Afghanistan was also at the top of agenda.
The ministers debated on common cooperation initiatives of Poland, Romania and Turkey, which will be undertaken in the coming months. The projects involve boosting activity and facilitating joint actions of the three countries within the framework of NATO, OSCE, and also in some capitals of the partner countries. The chiefs of diplomacy agreed to schedule the next ministerial consultations in this formula for 2021 in Bucharest.
The meetings of the Polish-Romanian-Turkish Trilogue have been held regularly since 2012 (since 2016 - at the level of foreign ministers). They aim at strengthening cooperation between allies who represent the largest courtiers of the eastern NATO flank, and coordinating positions on the core issues for the regional security. The last meeting of this format took place in April 2019 in Ankara.
