The Jerzy Giedroyć Competition for the best research papers on Polish-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Polish relations has been resumed

After a five-year break, the Ministry of Foreign Affaires resumes the Jerzy Giedroyć Competition for the best research papers on Polish-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Polish relations. The initiative is being implemented by the Polish Institute in Kyiv in cooperation with the Centre for East European Studies at the University of Warsaw, and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Kyiv.

The project is addressed to young researchers from Ukraine. It was launched in 2006, on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jerzy Giedroyć, an outstanding figure in Polish culture. Giedroyc was a publicist, the creator and editor of "Kultura", a leading Polish-émigré magazine published in Paris.

“I belive that the Competition will contribute to building Polish-Ukrainian understanding and friendship as well as to strenghtening the position of our countries in Europe – values so important to the Competition’s patron,” said Minister Radosław Sikorski, who assumed honorary patronage over the project.

To participate, please submit the following documents by September 2, 2024:

  • Bachelor's or Master's thesis or a PhD dissertation on the subject of Polish history, contemporary Poland, or Polish-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Polish relations, written in the years 2022-2024,
  • short summary of the paper,
  • CV.

The Competition awards the following prizes:

  • for doctoral dissertations: 1st prize – EUR 2,000.00, 2nd prize – EUR 1,500.00, 3rd prize – EUR 1,000.00,
  • for Master’s theses: 1st prize – 1 500,00 EUR, 2nd prize – 1 000,00 EUR, 3rd prize – 700,00 EUR,  
  • for Bachelor's theses: 1st prize – 1 000,00 EUR, 2nd prize – 700,00 EUR, 3rd prize – 500,00 EUR.

Winners and finalists will also be invited to participate in workshops at the Ukraine-Poland Academic Youth Exchange Center in Mikulychyn.

The winners will be selected by the competition committee chaired by prof. dr Olga Hnatiuk (University of Warsaw and the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy). The awards ceremony is planned around December 2 – on the anniversary of Poland's recognition of Ukraine's independence.
