Undersecretary of State Jakub Wiśniewski participates in second round of Poland–Guatemala political consultations
12.06.2024
Today’s talks between Deputy Minister Jakub Wiśniewski and Deputy Foreign Minister of Guatemala Monica Bolaños Pérez were the first in this format in 20 years. The consultations were organised pursuant to the Agreement on bilateral political consultations signed last year.
Deputy Minister Wiśniewski highlighted the importance of resuming this mechanism, especially given that this year marks the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Poland and Guatemala. The minister also referred to last year’s inauguration of the Embassy of Guatemala in Warsaw. He expressed his conviction that this decision will contribute to the strengthening of mutual cooperation and handed the Guatemalan side a note verbale with agrément for the new Ambassador of Guatemala in Warsaw, Ms Sandra Noriega Urízar de Kugler.
The talks in Warsaw confirmed both sides’ willingness to further strengthen political relations, both in bilateral and multilateral formats, including the UN. Minister Monica Bolaños Pérez assured her counterpart that the new Guatemalan administration plans to engage more actively in the works of the Community of Democracies, among others.
The topics discussed during the consultations also included economic and investment issues, with a particular focus on different kinds of technological innovations in the financial sector (FinTech) and the food industry as the most promising cooperation areas.
Deputy Minister Jakub Wisniewski expressed gratitude for the support offered to the Polish archaeologists conducting research in Guatemala. Poland–Guatemala cooperation in this area is exceptional on a European scale and has contributed to many spectacular discoveries concerning the Maya culture.
Additionally, the interlocutors discussed the regional issues, including the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union as well as the EU–CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Summit, planned for 2025.
The deputy ministers also exchanged views on the current global challenges, such as migration issues and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Undersecretary of State Jakub Wiśniewski thanked the Guatemalan side for their unambiguously pro-Ukrainian stance, which is evidenced, among other things, by the announcement of President Bernardo Arévalo’s participation in the upcoming peace summit in Switzerland.
