Undersecretary of State Paweł Jabłoński pays a working visit to Jordan
21.09.2021
On 20-21 September 2021, MFA Undersecretary of State Paweł Jabłoński paid a working visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The main item on the agenda comprised political consultations with Secretary-General Yousef Bataineh of the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.
The talks focused on a review of bilateral relations between the two countries and their political, diplomatic, military and economic cooperation, including in particular the options to enhance exports in the sectors of key importance for the Polish and the Jordanian economies, such as agriculture, food production and processing, or renewable energy. Also discussed were the scenarios of how the situation in the Middle East might evolve, along with the impact of that situation on the security landscape in the region and beyond, especially in the context of migration, and possible steps to be taken by the international community.
While in Jordan, Deputy Minister Jabłoński also visited the Zaatari refugee camp located 12 km from the Syrian border, where he met with Dr Yaroup Ajlouni, President of the Jordan Health Aid Society International (JHASi). The JHASi is a non-governmental organisation that offers active support to the most impoverished local communities in Jordan and other countries in the Middle East and North Africa, especially in terms of access to health care and medical services. The cooperation between the Polish government and the JHASi has continued for several years now; it was in Zaatari that the Polish Medical Training and Consultancy Center was launched in December 2017 as part of that endeavour, offering training programmes for the staff working at the camp and educational sessions for its inhabitants. In 2021, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Amman and the JHASi have jointly embarked on two more projects in Jordan. The first of these projects aims at ensuring access to specialist diagnostics for patients living in Zaatari and classified as being at a high risk of cancer. The other one concerns safeguarding access to specialist gynaecological and obstetric care for pregnant patients and the mothers of infants from the poorest parts of the country.
Another important point on the agenda of Deputy Minister Jabłoński’s visit involved meetings with the representatives of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, the Jordan Europe Business Association, and the Arab Renewable Energy Commission (AREC). During the meetings, the most prospective areas of economic cooperation were discussed, especially modern technologies. The Jordanian side was introduced to the possibilities of cooperation in such fields as the drone market, green technologies as well as agriculture and foods.
The total value of development and humanitarian aid provided by Poland to Jordan between 2012 and 2020 amounted to nearly PLN 26.5 million, including about PLN 3.8 million in 2020 alone. The projects implemented by Poland in that country related to the provision of shelter, medical aid (including in response to the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic), psychological support, food aid, vocational training, and social and educational activities for the youth.
