The ministers focused on the state of relations between the European Union and China, including preparations for the EU-China Summit to be held in June, and the meeting of EU-27 leaders and China in September. The ministers also spoke about the situation in Afghanistan.

When discussing the EU’s cooperation with China, the chief of Polish diplomacy pointed out that China’s increasing global importance calls for more EU unity. He recalled the proposals put forward by Poland in June 2019 for the principles of the EU’s cooperation with China, including ensuring transparency and coordination in EU measures addressed to China, the importance of the transatlantic relationship in building relations with Beijing, and striking a balance between a pragmatic approach and the protection of common values. He also noted that the Chinese market remains closed to European exports, in particular agri-food products.  -It is of key importance for Poland to further eliminate trade barriers and to ensure access to the Chinese market for goods from the EU on the basis of reciprocity, - stressed Minister Jacek Czaputowicz.

The EU ministers agreed the text of a statement expressing concern about China’s behaviour that undermines international commitments on Hong Kong’s status.

In the debate on Afghanistan, Minister Czaputowicz underlined the importance of the EU’s involvement in efforts to stabilise the country’s political situation and improve its security.  -We welcome the agreement reached by President Ashraf Ghani and President of the High Council of National Reconciliation Dr Abdullah Abdullah, - said Minister Czaputowicz. He also recalled that Poland remains committed to stabilising the situation in Afghanistan, including through the contribution of the Polish Military Contingent.

The Council of the EU adopted conclusions on Afghanistan, which reaffirm the EU’s support for the people of Afghanistan on their path towards peace, security and stability.
