On 1 June 2021, Minister Zbigniew Rau attended a virtual NATO foreign ministerial ahead of the NATO summit to be held in Brussels on 14 June 2021.
The ministers assessed, among others, the NATO 2030 process as a strategic reflection on the future of the Alliance. They mainly discussed the political and military directions to adapt the Alliance, current security threats and challenges such as Russia’s aggressive stance, China’s growing power, and unconventional threats of hybrid, cyber, information or technological nature. The attendees also addressed NATO’s further support for Afghanistan.
“Deepening the transatlantic community of security interests and strengthening the Alliance’s role in collective defence is of paramount importance for Poland,” underlined Minister Zbigniew Rau.
A substantial part of the debate was devoted to Russia and the security situation in Ukraine as well as the actions taken by Belarusian authorities. Minister Rau referred to the Ryanair airplane’s forced landing in Minsk, noting the consequences of Belarusian steps for European security and addressing Russian-Belarusian cooperation.
