On the occasion of today's anniversary of Poland's official request to start negotiations on an association agreement with the European Communities, we remind you of the most important dates and events in the process of Poland's integration with the European Union.

    Poland and the European Communities signed the agreement on trade and economic cooperation.j.
  • 25 May 1990, Brussels
    Poland submitted an official application for negotiations of an association agreement with the European Communities.
  • 16 December 1991, Brussels
    The European Treaty was signed which established association between the Republic of Poland on one side and the European Communities and their member states on the other.
  • 21-22 June 1993, Copenhagen
    The European Council agreed that accession of the Central and Eastern European countries to the European Union is also the EU’s goal. The achievement of this goal shall depend on these countries fulfilling certain political and economic criteria, known as the Copenhagen criteria.
  • 1 February 1994, Warsaw
    The Council of Ministers of the Republic of Poland passed resolution on entry into force of the European Treaty establishing association between the Republic of Poland and the European Communities and their member states.
  • 8 April 1994, Athens
    Poland handed its application for the accession to the European Union to the representative of the Greek EU Presidency..
  • 13 December 2002, Copenhagen
    The European Council approved the result of accession negotiations with Poland and nine other candidate countries for EU membership: Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary.
  • 16 April 2003, Athens
    The Accession Treaty was formally signed by representatives of 25 countries – 15 member states and 10 candidates for membership which, consequently, became countries acceding to the European Union.
     
  • 7-8 June 2003
    A nationwide referendum on Poland's accession to the European Union was held.
     
  • 1 May 2004
    ​​​​​​​Poland became a Member State of the European Union.​​​​​​​
