Conference on media freedom in Belarus
08.03.2021
The situation in Belarus, in particular the repression and violence against female journalists, was the main topic of the conference organised by the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to the EU in cooperation with Belsat TV.
The conference was an opportunity to discuss the recent developments in Belarus, where scandalous trials took place, in which Belsat TV journalists Katsyaryna Andreyeva and Darya Chultsova, as well as Katsiaryna Barysevich representing the Tut.by portal were sentenced to prison.
During the meeting, a comprehensive plan of economic support for a democratic Belarus was also discussed. The plan is being prepared by the European Commission, in accordance with the conclusions of the European Council in October 2020.
The video conference was attended by the leader of the Belarusian opposition, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, director of TV Belsat Agnieszka Romaszewska, Ambassadors of the EU Member States alongside representatives of the US, Canada and the United Kingdom. EU institutions were represented by EEAS' Secretary General Stefano Sannino amongst others.
