22.10.2021

On the first day of the European Council, EU heads of states and governments held a discussion on energy prices, COVID19, trade, external relations and the rule of law.

Heads of States began the meeting by exchanging views on the energy price rises currently affecting almost the whole of Europe. Conclusions on this issue were adopted at a working dinner. Another topic of the summit was countering Covid-19, including the vaccination process and coordination and preparation for the next wave of the pandemic. The European Council also held a discussion on the European Union's trade agreements with external partners. During dinner, the topic of preparations for the upcoming international meetings - the COP26 climate conference starting in Glasgow at the end of October, as well as the ASEM (Asia-Europe) summit in November and the Eastern Partnership summit in December - also emerged. In the context of the rule of law, heads of governments pointed to the need to find a compromise and respect different views on the issue. "At the EU summit, I informed that Poland is planning the next stage of justice reform; Poland will not accept that judicial decisions taken in our country will be considered invalid," concluded the head of the Polish government.

Leaders on the second day of the meeting assessed the implementation of the June 2021 RE conclusions on migration policy. Recent events at the EU's external borders clearly indicate that the EU is not adequately protected against hybrid attacks using migration as an instrument combined with disinformation activities. "The condemnation of the actions of the Lukashenko regime and its facilitator has been unequivocal and this is certainly an issue that we have been able to communalise and convince our partners that it is decisive action that will serve the EU to effectively protect its borders," the Prime Minister said. In addition, the European Council reviewed progress on the Digital Agenda and cyber security.
