21.10.2022
The main topics of the European Council meeting were the discussion on the situation in Ukraine, energy issues and the future of the EU's relations with China. Poland was represented by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
"The European Council in its conclusions, at the request of Poland, states unequivocally that Russia is responsible for the consequences of the energy and economic crisis and all aspects of the crisis that virtually the entire EU is facing," - said the head of government at a press conference summarising the results of the two-day summit. "I am encouraged by the fact that, after difficult discussions, it was possible to maintain unity within the 27 countries of the European Union and to reach common conclusions." - he added.
During the meeting, the leaders addressed the current situation in the energy market, with a particular focus on rising energy prices and the security of supply. The topic of measures proposed by the European Commission to reform the EU energy market and the security of energy infrastructure was also addressed, in the context of the sabotage targeting the NordStream gas pipeline.
EU leaders condemned the escalation of Russian aggression towards Ukraine, including Russia's recent missile attacks on Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure, as well as actions around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. The leaders addressed in detail the issue of Ukraine's economic, military, financial, and humanitarian support, as well as the country's post-war reconstruction. The situation in Belarus, which supports Russian military action, was also discussed.
In addition, the leaders debated the future of the EU's relationship with China and discussed the state of preparations for the EU-ASEAN summit in December.
