09.02.2023
The main topics of the Extraordinary European Council meeting were the discussion on the situation in Ukraine, migration and economic issues. Russia's aggression against Ukraine remains at the centre of leaders' discussions. The European Council discussed the European Union's continued support for that country in all its dimensions.
"We are trying, together with a coalition of other countries, to ensure that Ukraine receives as much military support as possible, but we are doing it in such a way that this support will be led first and foremost by others, because Poland has provided a lot of assistance so far," the head of the Polish government said.
The EU leaders discussed the most recent developments related to Russian aggression against Ukraine and the EU's continued support for the country. The leaders also discussed the Ukrainian peace initiative, based on full respect for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, the possible use of frozen Russian assets, and the issue of holding aggressors accountable for their crimes.
In the discussion on migration, EU leaders discussed the external dimension of migration, improving returns and readmission, better control of the EU's external borders and the fight against the trafficking and smuggling of human beings.
Faced with new geopolitical reality, leaders exchanged views on how to ensure the EU's competitiveness in the long term and strengthen the Community's position on the international scene. The discussion covered, in particular, the simplification of state aid rules in the EU, as well as budgetary solutions to increase investment.
