General Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg

During the General Affairs Council, EU ministers were focused on the preparation of the next European Council and discussed the state of negotiations between the European Union and Great Britain. Poland was represented by the Minister for the European Union, Konrad Szymański.

EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier informed about the ongoing negotiations between the EU and the UK, the implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement and the readiness to end the transition period on 31 December 2020. Ministers unanimously expressed their support for further actions aimed at reaching a compromise.

In addition, a detailed exchange of views on draft conclusions was held for the European Council on 15 and 16 October. Leaders at the summit will talk about the epidemiological situation, relations with the UK, as well as climate change and relations with Africa.

The annual Council Dialogue on the Rule of Law was also discussed. Ministers held a horizontal debate on four main topics: justice systems, anti-corruption framework, media pluralism and other institutional issues related to the system of checks and balances.
