General Affairs Council
25.02.2020
At the GAC meeting, ministers for European affairs focused on the preparation of the European Council summit, which is scheduled for 26-27 March. In addition, the Council held a discussion on the next steps of the negotiations between the EU and the UK, the EU enlargement policy and legislative priorities. Poland was represented by Minister Konrad Szymański.
Ahead of the March European Council, the ministers agreed that the agenda would cover a discussion on how to strengthen the economic base of the EU, the digital dimension, enlargement, as well as foreign policy issues, especially in the context of summits with China and India. During the meeting, ministers adopted a negotiating mandate, which from 2 March will be the basis for talks with the United Kingdom for the European Commission. The Commission also presented a new methodology for EU enlargement. Ensuring greater credibility, stronger political orientation, a more dynamic process and predictability are key elements of the revised proposal.
After the General Affairs Council meeting, there was a meeting of ministers from the so-called Cohesion Friends Group, whose main goal was to discuss the next phase of negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027.
