Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki attended a two-day meeting of EU heads of states and governments in Versailles. EU leaders held a discussion on the situation in Ukraine and security related to EU defence and energy policy. In addition, EU leaders discussed further EU economic development and a new European growth model.
"After several hours of good, lively debate, it became clear to everyone that we want to see Ukraine in the European Union," - said the head of the Polish government.
Pending the European Commission's opinion on Ukraine's application for membership of the European Union, member states assured that they would continue to deepen their partnership with the country without undue delay and support Ukraine on its European path. Furthermore, the European Council called on Russia to immediately and unconditionally cease warfare, and to withdraw all forces and military equipment from all Ukrainian territory. The heads of state and government also expressed their appreciation to the Ukrainian people for their courage in defending their country and cultivating such values as freedom and democracy.
The leaders' talks also focused on the current energy situation, which requires urgent action to ensure the security of gas supplies to EU Member States and Energy Community members (including in particular Ukraine and Moldova) this year and next. Member States agree that this issue must be closely coordinated within the EU and with partners.
Heads of states and government announced further work to build a more solid economic base, reduce strategic dependencies and strengthen the supply of critical raw materials and semiconductors. Innovation and sustainable manufacturing of medicines will be supported through research funding and capacity building for critical products.
During the meeting, Poland welcomed the proposed defence package including a roadmap for the development of critical technologies in the EU defence and security sector.
