09.09.2020
The situation in Belarus and the poisoning of the Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny were the main topics of a joint meeting of two delegations from the European Parliament, EU-Belarus and EU-Russia. The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Poland to the EU Andrzej Sados participated in the meeting, which was held in the form of a videoconference.
"It was a Polish initiative that saw the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, convene an extraordinary videoconference of EU foreign ministers on 14 August, and the President of the European Council to hold a videoconference of EU heads of state and government on 19 August in order to discuss the situation in Belarus and further EU actions with this regard ”- emphasized Ambassador Sados in his speech. “Relations between the European Union and Belarus can only fully develop if human rights and democratic principles are respected. Unfortunately, as the Belarusian authorities continue to repress peaceful demonstrators, there is a need for international pressure to immediately stop the violence and to release all prisoners detained for political reasons" the PermRep added.
The result of the talks was a joint statement by the heads of both delegations: Ryszard Czarnecki and Robert Biedroń.
