Meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg
12.10.2020
The European Union's relations with Russia, the situation in Belarus and the events in Nagorno-Karabakh were the main topics of the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) meeting held in Luxembourg. The Polish delegation was headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Zbigniew Rau.
The heads of diplomacy of EU Member States agreed on a new sanctions list concerning Belarus, which included, amongst others, Alexander Lukashenka. The ministers also made a political decision on the need to impose sanctions against Russia for attempting to poison the oppositionist Alexei Navalny.
During the discussion, the Member States expressed their solidarity with Poland and Lithuania in response to the demands of Alexander Lukashenka to limit the number of diplomats of these countries in Belarus. "I must say with great satisfaction that both Poland and Lithuania met with decisive support from EU countries in our diplomatic confrontation with Belarus", said Minister Zbigniew Rau.
In the context of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, ministers discussed how the EU could support the ceasefire agreed on 10 October 2020. They stressed that the ceasefire must be respected and that all actors in the region should make every effort to avoid armed confrontation.
Moreover, the chiefs of diplomacy emphasized the importance of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue for stability in the Western Balkans, declaring their support for all actions aimed at reaching a compromise between the two sides.
