Meeting of the European Council

Future relations with the United Kingdom, issues related to climate neutrality and the current epidemiological situation were the main topics of the European Council meeting. On behalf of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who is in quarantine, Poland was represented by the head of the Czech government Andrej Babisz.

EU leaders discussed the state of implementation of the Brexit agreement and, together with the chief negotiator Michel Barnier, analyzed the progress in negotiations between the EU and the UK.  Leaders called on the United Kingdom to make the necessary moves to make an agreement possible.

The heads of state and government also reviewed efforts to meet the objective of a climate-neutral EU by 2050, in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. The European Council discussed the Commission’s plan on 2030 climate ambition and the actions required to achieve that ambition. Leaders will return to climate-related matters at the European Council in December.

EU leaders raised the topic of coordinating the actions of member states in response to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, also in the context of work on the development and distribution of a vaccine at EU level.

During the meeting, the EU's relations with African states and the African Union were discussed, including economic cooperation and development aid, as well as joint activities in the areas of social and migration policy, human rights protection, security and conflict prevention, and the fight against terrorism.

The leaders also exchanged views on the recent developments in Russia, Turkey and Belarus. Poland emphasized the importance of EU sanctions adopted for the poisioning of Alexei Navalny, and appreciated the solidarity of EU Member States towards Poland and Lithuania after Alexander Lukashenka's decision to expel the diplomats of these countries.
