Special meeting of the European Council
21.02.2020
During a special European Council meeting, EU leaders did not reach an agreement on the next Multiannual Financial Framework (2021-2027).
The working session on the first day of the European Council was devoted to the presentation of member states' positions on the nego box. The President of the European Council Charles Michel held a round of bilateral meetings with all member states to reach a compromise. The second day of the summit, despite the new proposal being put forward by the European Commission, did not result with a MFF deal. A schedule of further work on the first post-brexit EU budget will be presented in the coming days.
In the margins of the European Council, EU heads of states and governments adopted a declaration calling on all actors to cease hostilities immediately in the Syrian province of Idlib.
