Video conference of ministers of health
15.04.2020
EU ministers of health held a video conference to take stock of the current situation and measures already taken in response to the spread of COVID-19 in the EU and to reflect on the challenges ahead in order to find the best coordinated approach for moving forward.
The discussion focused on strategies for phasing out measures by Member States to limit the spread of COVID-19 infections.
The Vice-President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas presented the EC communiqué published today on the roadmap on the lifting of restrictions on measures limiting the spread of COVID-19 and asked Member States to take into account prepared criteria and recommendations when introducing national exit strategies.
Ministers reported on the current epidemiological situation and national plans for the gradual lifting of restrictions. It was emphasized that, as a rule, decisions must be taken by Member States on the basis of the national epidemiological situation, and the efficiency of respective healthcare systems is also a key issue. With the gradual lifting of restrictions, the current protective measures should be nonetheless maintained, such as respecting hygiene rules, social distancing, and protection of groups particularly vulnerable to the virus. It is also important to strengthen the test capacity and to use mobile applications to monitor and control the spread of infections.
