Video conference of ministers of home affairs

EU ministers responsible for home affairs held a video conference to discuss the state of play and way forward on the response to COVID-19 in the area of home affairs. They were also informed about the state of play and current challenges with regard to migration. Poland was represented by Bartosz Grodecki, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of the Interior and Administration.

During the exchange of views on COVID19, Member States indicated that in the near future control at internal and external borders, due to the epidemiological situation, would be maintained. The Polish representative emphasized that in a situation of dynamic virus development, the time and scope of border control measures must be considered vis-à-vis the level of epidemic threat, also the local and national conditions must be taken into account.

Ministers exchanged domestic experiences with the use of tracking applications, indicating that the use of this technology is one of the most important control measures helping contain the spread of the virus, while also underlining the need to respect privacy and the relevant provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation.

In the discussion on asylum, returns and resettlement, the European Commission maintained its interpretation that it is not possible to extend the deadlines for Dublin transfers due to force majeure.

The item on the agenda about the migration situation in southern Europe was informative. The Croatian Presidency provided information on the persistent pressure on all three Mediterranean migration routes.
