The Environmental Impact Assessment Department is responsible for the introduction and implementation of the rules for operating the environmental impact assessment system in Poland and for its coordination. The Department also conducts and monitors legislative processes that may affect the correct transposition of EU regulations in the above-mentioned respect. Furthermore, the Department participates in strategic environmental impact assessments (regarding, among others, projects implemented as part of national policies and strategies) and in cross-border proceedings as part of environmental impact assessments and strategic environmental impact assessments.

The Department also conducts administrative proceedings in the second instance, as well as in extraordinary procedures, and participates in court and administrative proceedings regarding projects that may significantly affect the environment. The Department is involved in ensuring the correct application of law in the investment process regarding EU-funded projects. Its tasks also include matters related to the implementation of international and bilateral commitments regarding environmental impact assessments. Moreover, the Department is responsible for supporting the National Commission for Environmental Impact Assessments.
