Wireless Systems and Networks Department (Z-8)
Wireless Systems and Networks Department in Gdańsk (Z-8) conducts scientific research and development in the fields of radiocommunication and satellite systems, wireless sensor networks, modern transmission techniques, wireless transmission security and issues related to propagation in land and maritime systems. Additionally, the department's competencies include designing and simulating radio networks, analyzing security issues on land and sea, performing system parameters’ measurements and preparing expert opinions and technical documentation.
History and present activities
The branch of the National Institute of Telecommunications in Gdańsk was established in 1962 as a result of cooperation between the National Institute of Telecommunications in Warsaw and the Faculty of Communications at Gdańsk University of Technology. In 1999, the branch transformed into the Independent Remote Lab of Telecommunications and Maritime Radiocommunication in Gdańsk, and in 2005, it became the Independent Lab of Maritime Radiocommunication in Gdańsk. It currently operates under the name Wireless Systems and Networks Department.
Department activity areas:
- Digital radiocommunication: Research on system development – simulations, simulation software development, cryptography, prototype devices,
- Wireless communication solutions for e-navigation– e.g., VDES,
- Propagation analyses, radio planning of radiocommunication systems,
- Impact analyses of wind turbines on wireless and radar communication systems,
- Wireless sensor networks,
- Satellite radiocommunication (Starlink, Inmarsat, Cospas-Sarsat, VSAT, etc.),
- Radionavigation – GPS, DGPS, Galileo, AIS,
- Localization and monitoring systems,
- Expert opinions and professional studies on digital radiocommunication systems, radionavigation systems, particularly maritime radiocommunication systems (consulting).
Within the Z-8 Department, two labs and a secure project laboratory have been established:
- Satellite Systems and Techniques Lab,
- Radio Networks and Devices Measurement Lab,
- Secure Project Laboratory.
