Official celebration of 81st. anniversary of Battle of Narvik

The official celebration of the 81st anniversary of the Battle of Narvik has taken place on 28th of May. In the commemoration of the anniversary participated delegations of the Allied States, the authorities of Narvik and representatives of the Armed Forces of Norway. Polish side was represented by the Defense Attaché, Comandor Bogdan Anuszkiewicz, Vice-consul Andrzej Jach, as well as a representative of the local Polish community - Mrs. Elżbieta Borgso.

Battle of Narvik - celebration

Participants of the celebrations laid wreaths on the landing site of the Allied Forces in Skjomnes, near Narvik, at the monument in Hakvik cementary where 66 Polish soliders who died during Battle of Narvik were buried, and at other memorial sites.

On the night 27/28 May 1940 Narvik was captured simultaneously by the 13th semi-brigade of the Foreign Legion and Podhale Rifle Brigade. Polish brigade, with less than 5000 soldiers, accounted for 1/3 of all Allied Land Forces. During fighting for Narvik Podhale Rifle Brigade lost 97 soldiers, 28 were missing and 189 were injured.
