Official celebration of the 82nd anniversary of the Battle of Narvik

Official celebrations of the 82nd anniversary of the Battle of Narvik took place on May 30. During the celebrations flowers were laid at the monument "ORP Grom", the French and Norwegian monuments at Veteran's Square in Narvik and the Polish and British monuments at Forneset / Grindjord. Ceremonies were held also at the cemeteries in Narvik and Håkvik.

The ceremony at the cemetery in Narvik was opened by the vice-mayor of the city, the speech was delivered by the Polish Ambassador to Norway, I. Woicka-Żuławska, and then flowers were placed at the British, French, Polish, Norwegian and German monument. At the Håkvik cemetery there was an unveiling and blessing of a commemorative plaque dedicated to the Independent Podhale Rifle Brigade, a common prayer celebrated by priest Rafał Ochojski and a wreath at the Polish monument and flowers at French and British monuments. During lunch at the "Tǿtta" restaurant, Ambassador I. Woicka-Żuławska, in recognition of her contribution to deepening Polish-Norwegian relations, honored Mrs. Randi Melgaard, Head of the Culture Department at the Narvik City Hall with the Golden Cross of Merit.

Apart from the Ambassador of I. Wicka-Żuławska, the ceremony was attended by, among others, Consul of the Republic of Poland A. Śmiałek-Grzyb, Polish defense attaché W. Torbicki, representatives of Narvik authorities, representatives of the 21st Podhale Rifle Brigade and defense attaché of France and Great Britain.
