Visit of Ambassador I. Woicka-Żuławska to Svalbard

On July 14 - 18, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland in Oslo, I. Woicka-Żuławska, paid an official visit to Svalbard. The visit was also attended by the Ambassador of Croatia in Oslo A. Gustovic-Ercegovac, the Ambassador of Georgia M. Kipshidze and the Ambassador of Latvia J. Dobele.

The Ambassadors met with Lars Fause - the governor of Svalbard, Sara Borchgrevink Madsen - project manager at Visit Svalbard - tourism promotion agency of the archipelago and with prof. Steven Coulson - head of the biology departmentat University Center in Svalbard.

Ambassador I. Woicka-Żuławska thanked the governor for cooperation with Polish scientists in Svalbard and allowing them to carry out of the researches also by using infrastructure, which is directly under the governor's management. She asked for further such kind of support, including possible crisis situations. She also outlined the problems faced by the Polish Polar Station in Hornsund and seasonal research stations, proposing an in-depth discussion of these topics, to which the governor agreed.

Due to the increasing tourist traffic from Poland and the constant Polish research presence in the archipelago, it was also agreed necessity of of appointing honorary consul of the Republic of Poland in Svalbard.

On July 15, on the 150th anniversary of the birth of Henryk Bronisław Arctowski - outstanding Polish polar researcher, the Ambassador gave a short interview for "Svalbard Posten" referring to this anniversary, emphasizing the importance of research in Svalbard and the participation of Poles in the research, as well as the constant presence of researchers at the Polish Station Polar in Hornsund.

The Ambassador reminded that having in mind present dynamic of climate changes the research conducted by Polish scientists in Svalbard for decades is now of particular importance.
